Welcome to 20th Century Sparks

An Education Pack based on the QueenSpark Books Archive, for teachers and parents in Brighton & Hove.

QueenSpark Books has documented and published the lives of the people of Brighton & Hove for over thirty years. We have produced over eighty books of biography, memoirs, creative writing and oral history, which are now archived at www.queensparkbooks.org.uk

Our Education Pack draws out and orders the many voices from the archive, highlighting how the lives of ordinary people were affected by change, specifically throughout the first fifty years of the 20th Century. Whether due to war, poverty, developments in tourism or advancements in technology, change touches us all, forms our memories and shapes our stories and identities.

20th Century Sparks is for Primary and Secondary School teachers, and parents, and aims to support your teaching of history from a local perspective at Keystage 1, 2 and 3. It follows Schemes of Work on the National Curriculum and can also be used to support the teaching of Citizenship, English and Drama.

Extracts have been ordered under eight themes, listed on the left and right of the page. Each theme breaks down to further sub-themes, which are supported by links to www.queensparkbooks.org.uk. Teacher and Parents pages give suggested teaching tasks for you to follow. There are also further resource links to other useful sites, such as our associate website www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk, and further links to other schemes of work.

Each theme is also supported by a 'Teachers Community', which is located at the end of each theme's 'Teachers and Parents' page. Here you are given an opportunity to upload and share your own suggestions and comments on how to use these valuable memories to support teaching and learning.
